Adavancing Rights of Wetlands

On the 4th March 2026, we hosted the ‘Advancing Rights of Wetlands’ conference.

This was an online event attended by over 140 people in which a range of speakers gave their perspective on the Rights of Nature approach and more specifically the Rights of Wetlands.

We were delighted that the following shared their time, views and passion for the Rights of Nature: Katie Surma (Inside Climate News), Manjula Amararathna (Department of Wildlife Conservation, Sri Lankan Government), Louisa Chinyavu (Wetlands International Eastern Africa), Patricia Gualinga (Sarayaku, Ecuador), Craig Kauffman (University of Oregon, USA) and Paul Powlesland (Lawyers for Nature, UK).

Following a lively Q&A, Yolanda Belén Frías Nogales of Practical Action Bolivia and Gillian Davies of BSC Group gave a summary of some of the results and outputs of our Darwin Initiative project on the Rights of Wetlands.

In his closing, Ritesh Kumar of Wetlands International South Asia, aptly ended with:

…the Rights of Wetlands is about bringing the intrinsic, the relational, bringing the Indigenous worldview of Nature…let us continue this conversation, let’s bring more case studies out in the open and let the legal system also recognise that the Rights of Wetlands and Rights of Nature are in an important moment in time that needs to be introduced, needs to be captured in the current policy and programming instruments”.

We then screened our new (hot off the press) Rights of Wetlands animation!
